Description

  • Icon
  • Small icon with a saint incised. [From the 2002 site report and from photographic designations, this is certainly the icon mentioned as excavated in the area of room 30 in 2002, not a find from 2001 (no mention on any context sheet or in the report). It is, therefore, a small icon carved in low relief in black steatite, depicting a beardless male bust with a halo in a square frame with an arched top, broken at upper left. The recorded findspot is in a portion of PA 78 excavated in 2002, not 2001, over the bottom riser of the stairs in room 25, not in room 30 itself. Its presence in the wall collapse, like that of the cooking stand also found fragmented in PA 78 in 2001, could mean that it was mounted on an interior face of the SE wall of room 30, which seems to have fallen into room 25, when the destruction took place, but it is also possible that its original position was disturbed by the modern ditch 171, which destroyed the walls and staircase in that area. -- ATR, 23/10/2020]

[Layer of collapse of stone and tiles in room 25. Loose, sandy earth of a gray color, mixed with stones of various dimensions, the collapse of the walls surrounding room 25. Numerous tile fragments especially concentrated in the E part (of the room). Particularly evidence is the collapse of the (upper) part of the wall PA 156 that would have been above the "sleeper" (wooden beam inserted into the wall with a stabilizing function).]
