  • Hearth feature in room 28
  • Ashy-gray fine silt loam, roughly ovoid in shape 1.0 by 0.5m, hearth feature defined by incomplete cirle of stones next to door to street.
  • Feature trowel cleaned to trace possible interfaces, and to attempt to define limits. Feature fill removed, possibly with some of the final phase floor. Interface between feature fill in the north and floor surface difficult to ascertain, and some of the floor may have been removed (30cm diameter). Feature remarked as "large, but not impossible as a hearth"

Interpretation

    • Fill of hearth feature filled in prior to the final occupation phase of room 28. Excavation revealed feature to be filled in with densly packed fill. Tiles laid flat, likely as a product of leveling. Fill nature evident in compact nature of fill containing bone, and sherds on edge. Clear evidence of metalworking including, hearth bottom (not bonded to anything), smithing spheres, slag (ferrous and cuperous), ash, and coal. Hearth wall discerned near the bedrock on the east wall and south wall of the feature.
