Description

  • Coin (courtyard)
  • Elliptical, some encrustations. Both faces appear worn flat. No features visible.
  • Theodosius I and Aelia Flaccilla (379-386)
  • AE2
  • Profile bust of Flaccilla. AEL[FLA]CCI
  • Empress standing, facing, with arms crossed. Chrisma in right field. In the exergue, CONS (C ot O?)
  • Sear, Roman Coins, p. 353, no. 4192.
  • MC 92 [19510]. Worn out by use. Numismatist interpreted reverse as Salus standing and holding an object (a phiale?), but the chrisma and weight suggest this could be RIC IX Constantinople 82, http://numismatics.org/ocre/id/ric.9.cnp.82, in which case the figure is the empress standing with arms crossed. Other AE2 coins with Aelia Flaccilla have Victory seated inscribing a chrisma on a shield (e.g. RIC IX Constantinople 55 subtype 3, http://numismatics.org/ocre/id/ric.9.cnp.55.3), but photos missing and therefore impossible to tell which was intended.
