Description

  • Coin
  • Almost complete coin; triangular nick 0.8 cm long, 0.2 cm deep cut from circumference. Clear evidence of raised border on edges of both faces. General corrosion and some encrustation masks features on both faces. One face may bear image of cross on pedestal with spheres either side. Other face may have Romanos monogram.
  • Anokhin: Basil II and Constantine VIII (1016-1025); Grierson: Basil I (876-879)
  •
  • Monogram of Basil and Constantine (κ Β ω). Barely visible.
  • Cross on steps with dots in both fields. Barely visible.
  • Anokhin 1980, Pl. XXIX, no. 445 (Basil II with Constantine VIII, Issue II, 1016-1025); DOC III, 19 (Basil I, Class 3, 876-879); Grierson 1982, no 869 (Basil I, 876-879).
  • MC 12 [19457]. Broken. Original catalogue entry identifies this coin as one of Romanus and Constantine, but the visible monogram strongly suggests this is an error.

Linked Contexts

  • Context: CH06SR_753
    • Layer of loosely packed, medium brown soil, heavy with debris of all types - especially iron nails (50+), pottery sherds, glass fragments and bronze (copper alloy) coinage. This layer was very thick - easily 20cm - and filled the whole of cut 728. There was very little ash or charcoal in this layer, though, as we reached the next context layer, there was an increasing amount of clay lumps in the soil and it became much more compact. There were also very many medium-large stones (many reused).
